Featured Posts will allow you to display posts above the Featured Categories, which you should have already seen how to use or should really check out.
To feature a post you’ll see a box named “Featured Posts Gallery” below the post you’re publishing, to add it follow the instructions there, simply select “Display in Gallery“.
Features categories allow you to display up to 5 categories below the Featured Posts, above the Latest Entries.
After you’ve finished the first and second step you’ll need to go to “Category Images” under “Appearance“, there you’ll see all the categories and description you’ve created in step 2.
You can select the images you’ve uploaded in step 1 in “Category Image” drop down list and “Add to navbar” on the right side, remember up to 5 categories can be viewed this way, BUT you’ll need at least one post in a category to feature it, you can’t feature an empty category.
Also, you can remove the category from the top navigation menu in the same place, see below:

To use the Featured Categories you’ll first need to upload the desired images via WP (not through the ftp!)
After you’ve uploaded the desired images you need to go to Categories and add some categories so you can feature them, add some description too, it’ll show just below said category.
